Summary - BSF2000 - Oct '03 | Its been a slow month for news. But here are some updates:
Call of Combat Development Blog A development blog has been setup. Check it out to find all kinds of updates on the game, and information on what is planned.
Super Soldier List The super soldier list has been updated with the new formula. The new formula is:
Games Played in the gaming period >= Games required per day (2) * games into the gaming period
The gaming period starts on the 27th of every month
Trouble with server Dreamnid had this to say about the recent problems: A number of you Thursday night have experienced many bugs due to the new update. Because of this, we have reverted back to the "old" version. Even though some games were played on stat servers, the stats should correct itself in a couple of days. I also like to remind you that we're going to wipe the stats when CoC becomes gold.
As some people saw, KAding is continuing to add new features and fixing bugs. Unfortunately, the new graphics package as well as network issues proved to be fatal.
Sorry for the problems. You may need to wait awhile when the application is starting up. The message should clear within a minute or so. | | 1 - Add/View Comments |

Officially Up - BSF2000 - Sep '03 | The Call of Combat Lobby Chat is back up. Here is what dreamnid had to say:
I finally managed to log in to our chat server, make the appropriate changes to the server, and it is now back up! You no longer have to press a key to see the chat. Thanks for hanging with us during this time! | | 0 - Add/View Comments |

Temporary Chat Up - BSF2000 - Sep '03 | A temporary lobby has been setup for Call of Combat. Dreamnid posted these directions on the Call of Combat homepage:
You can now join our temporary lobby chat. To do so, just type in any word in the lobby (after it joins the second lobby chat server) to join. Enjoy! | | 1 - Add/View Comments |

Lobby Update - BSF2000 - Sep '03 | Dreamnid of the Call of Combat staff has made the following post regarding the recent lobby downtime:
As you all know, the lobby chat has been down for a couple days. After trying to contact them via with no avail, I went to their forums and found out that they have changed their ip structure. Once I contact BL and he make the appropriate changes, we'll have the lobby chat running again. However, another problem crops up that KAding must also make the appropriate changes in the lobby software. So far, he has not made an appeareance for quite some time. This is probably due that the apartment rates are up in Amsterdam, and he has to switch between school, work, and sleep. Because of the rate hike, he has to work harder to pay for the dedicated server which hosts the stats database. One could hypothesize that he simply has no time to work on the game anytime soon :-(. We hope to establish contact soon however to work something out.
Thanks for your understanding.

Minor Downtime - BSF2000 - Sep '03 | [ UPDATE ] The stats will not be moved at this time.
Dreamnid, from the Call of Combat staff, informed us that the current stats will be moved onto a different server, thus causing small downtime. Here is what he had to say:
Ok, well, maybe more than a normal "maintenance." Due to deals with Hypernia, we have our own dedicated server :-). Tonight (say 10:00 PM EST), we are planning to move the database over so stats games will be down for a few moments. | | 2 - Add/View Comments |

Stats to be Wiped - BSF2000 - Jul '03 | Current Call of Combat stats will be wiped in the next couple of days. Here is what megaG had to say:
KAding is close to finishing an update for beta that will hopefully solve the ghost problems, will increase the pfc limit to 599 pps making cpl 600 pps, and will introduce PFC only rooms so that those who have been noted as beating up on new players to gain rank will not be able to do so this time around.
With ghosts removed and PFC only rooms enabled, the way people will gain pps will be much fairer and this of course is essential to the fundamental basics of the game.
To those who have spent hours playing already, in particular the AG COs who are trying to gain 6000 pps for 2nd lt, KAding and I apologise. The information i have AG COs at the time, informing them to chase rank was true at the time.
Remember folks this is a beta game, and you are beta testers and as a community were told in advance of stats being released that all stats would be wiped from time to time depending on updates and security issues.
There will be many things added to the latest update and i hope you all enjoy it.
To the AG COs out there still wondering about the AG selection process, KAding informs me that there is nothing to worry about, because when you need to know what is going on, you will be told by him.
Each and every AG CO applicant will receive and email from KAding personally to explain what is going on, at the time it is relevant and not before then. The reason why it may take longer than we all hope, is that KAding's priority is to the game code first, and the managerial side of things which i normally take care of, second. Obviously as i am unable to organise AG selection for simple enough reasons, we all need to be patient and to remember that AGs in a game filled with bugs is pointless, and that when the time does come, we will all be greatful that great care and effort was taken to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible with CoC goes gold.

Tournament Season 2 - BSF2000 - Jul '03 | Season 2 of the Call of Combat Tournament is coming. Here is what StingRay1129 had to say:
We are starting to organize the Round 2 Tourney... Here are the rules we have so far... Any rules you would like to add, please post here.
1.) A Whole AG Is entered into the tourney, No More Teams 2.) 3-5 captains will be chosen, atleast 1 captain has to be on for the game to count 3.) THE STATS WILL BE Configured with a formula i recieved from MegaG... It will go as so...
games played * Win percentage (to a factor of one) ie 75% win percentage = .75
4.) SS's Must be sent to Tourney@callofcombat.com Showing each regiment, who the Captain was, and the score. Any SS'S not sent, will not be counted (WE ARE STILL UNSURE BOUT THIS, But any NEW suggestions will be appreciated)
This is SOOOO FAR, there will be more rules. Please post comments/additions/changes.

Unfortunately at the end of next week I will lose access to the server and Internet connection I have been using to host CoC. In order to continue running the game I will need a dedicated Windows 2000 server on a high-speed connection.

Version 0.9 Released - BSF2000 - Jul '03 | Version 0.9 of Call of Combat has been released. Here is what KAding had to say:
Today version 0.9 of the game has been released in the beta version of the lobby.
It is currently still highly experimental, and has many unresolved bugs. In the next week or so we will gradually be fixing these problems.
So I suggest you do not play in the beta lobby unless you are prepared to be either amuzed or frustrated by the numerous problems.
Eventually this version should introduce personal statistics. We will post an update in this news section as soon as we feel the beta is ready for public use.

Status Update - BSF2000 - Jul '03 | Information regarding the Call of Combat tournament as well as the status of statistics has been posted by KAding. Here is what he had to say:
We have added a tournament page to the website. You can find it here.
Work on statistics is going very well. We are also working on a web interface so you can easily check any kind of statistics.
Initially only personal stats will be recorded, including among others PPs and kills. AG statistics will follow later, after some fixes to the beta system.

Status of CoC - BSF2000 - Jun '03 | HookedOnCoC recently sent a new message out revealing the status of Chain of Command. Here is what he said in the newsletter:
First I want to apologize for the length of time the games have been down. I had planned to have them back up after a few days but was asked to take an unexpected trip overseas for my "real job". I have been extremely busy and have not had time to put the fixes in that I had planned and put the games back up.
I also realized that I was missing a few files needed to make the games work properly with the database. I have obtained the files but I am now trying to configure them.
Lastly, I am looking for a new server to host the games.
I have "heard through the grapevine" that some of you think this has been a joke and that CoC is gone again for good. Rest assured I am spending a lot of time trying to get things back in order so that you can enjoy the games again
Again, I apologize and I hope to have the games back up shortly.

v0.88 Is Here - BSF2000 - Jun '03 | Version 0.88 of Call of Combat has been released! Here is what KAding had to say about it in THIS forum thread:
Right,
After another 24 hour delay I think I am finally ready to release this sucker. Mind you, I don’t know if it’ll work . All the minor and major changes I have made to the game code in the last few months have caused some troubles when I tried to put this thing on the internet. I think I have resolved most problems now though.
To play you’ll need to register on this page. Once you’ve done that you can load the lobby: Beta Lobby. You can also go to the downloads section of the homepage. You will not be able to change anything after you have registered for this beta, so you will be stuck with the AG you used on the registration form. Most likely you will have to reregister anyway once this version leaves beta. The game still doesn’t keep any stats!
Remember that this version is still very much in beta, I have not tested most features properly. In the following areas I am still very much expecting problems:
• The authentication server. I am not sure how long it will keep running, it’s bound to fail at one time and another. I still need to create a few scripts that ensure it is up and running at all times. • Rejoining the game after being booted is probably going to have some quirks as well, which may or may not render the game unplayable .
A bit about authentication: All servers will require authentication, both public and private. If the authentication server is somehow malfunctioning I suggest you report it and go back to v0.864c. The lobby chat is not secure! With that I mean that although you have to login when entering the lobby, people in the chat could possibly not be who they claim to be, just like it is in v0.864c. I am still working on proper authentication for the chat. The rooms are fully authenticated though.
Let me give a list of what changed in v0.88, compared to the current v0.864c. This is the same list a posted on the forum a week or two ago, except for two new features, the automatic underlining of links and emails in both the lobby and game chat, and a ‘latest news’ welcome message in the lobby.
The game: • The game now supports different floor types • It will no longer be possible to multiply weapons • You can now use “/score” and “/time” in the chat box to get some info in case you are not playing yourself • Login has been implemented, everyone will have a unique ID • It is now possible to join a room while a game is in progress • Soldiers will now remain in the game as ‘ghosts’ (and can be killed) if someone leaves during a game. • It is now possible to rejoin a game if you have been disconnected from it. Say, you have a short power outage and get disconnected. You can then rejoin the room and continue playing! • Grass is now shown properly on Ati Radeon graphics systems • Several minor bug fixes have also been taken care of • URLs and email links now automatically get underlined in the chat
The server: • A lot has happened to the server ‘under the hood’ to prepare it for authentication, stats and remote management. • A ‘ban management’ system has been added, which allows you to easily ban certain usernames or IP addresses for a specified time period. This will also be stored on disk, so it won’t be gone after a reboot. • It is now possible to do a soft restart of the server. If a game is in progress it will be discontinued, but this way it is possible to reinitialize the server without having to restart the whole program. • There is now an option to log all server activity to a file. You will be able to see who joined, what was being said and the games that were played. • You will now be able to password protect a game, meaning the only people who know the password can get in. In case you want to do private regiment training on your own server, without annoying people barging in .
Admin tools: • The servers can now be remotely controlled by MPs. Meaning if there is a problem or certain settings need to be changed, the MPs will have the power to do so. • A tool was developed for MPs to easily ban people from the rooms • Within a few days after this release we should have several official servers online that should be up 24/7 with a decent connection.
The lobby: • The lobby will now show properly which map being played on a server • Instead of just being able to see who is in a room, you will also be able to see who is playing exactly, who is on what team, what phase the game is in, the time left before the game ends and the current score. • URLs and email links now automatically get underlined in the chat • A ‘Latest news’ welcome message has been added to the chat
I will from now on be back online to help manage the game. So I’ll be active on the forums and on MSN. Please report any problems with either v0.864c or v0.88 on the forum! Never assume I know anything, I am usually very badly informed!
I suggest we get make this update official ASAP and then I can start working on the stats! Stats is what you guys want, right??

v0.88 - BSF2000 - Jun '03 | KAding recently posted in the offical Call of Combat forums about an upcoming update, v0.88. Here is what he said:
I am currently in the proces of creating a beta section for the update. This should be finished either tonight or sometime tommorow.
It is possible the lobby will break down occasionally while I set it all up.
As of tommorow you should all be able to play the new version, while keeping the old version for the moment. After about a week or so we will probably make the update official.
Sorry for the problems,
KAding

More Updates - BSF2000 - May '03 | The hoster of Chain of Command has released more upcoming updates in the newsletter. Here is what he said:
On Monday June 2nd I will be posting a web page that will allow you to register your CoC usernamepassword for use in the game. The page will be posted at:
http://www.computerpole.com/coc/register.htm
Later in the week you will be required to use this namepasswor dto enter the games. I am still working out 1 bug in the lobby but may post it anyway.
Along with this usernamepassword stats will also be collected and stored from session to session.
I am working on a new version of the client which will probably require you to download a new version of hte Creation.exe file- but not the entire CoC game (aprox. 1.5 MB)
Enjoy!

Upcoming Updates - BSF2000 - May '03 | The hoster of Chain of Command has released more upcoming changes that will be occuring in the game. Here is what he said in a recent newsletter:
Over the course of the next week or 2 I will be making some updates that will require me to close the games down for short periods of time (usually for 5-10 minutes at a shot).
The following changes will be taking place during the time frame:
1) A new web page will be posted where you will be required to register your username and password.
2) A lobby will be put up as "Game 1"- the lobby will show users names ranks and stats but will not yet allow you to go into games form the lobby- this will hopefully be a short term situation. The current Game 1 will become Game 2. Instructions on how to manually go to game 2 will be posted.
3) A new download will be posted for new users- anyone who currently has the game running will not be required to re-download or auto-update.
It is possible, even likely, that there will be some problems with stats over the course of the first few weeks. Therefore- I am giving advance warning that stats may be wiped out at any time in order to allow me to fix problmes. I will try to give more advanced warning but.... be warned!!!
Once all the glitches are ironed out we will hopefully be able to re-introduce regiment play.
Enjoy the games....

An Announcement - BSF2000 - May '03 | KAding recently posted an announcement about his absence as well as some upcoming updates. Here is what he said:
Hello everyone,
Yes, I am still alive . There have been several reasons for my rather long absence, although none of those reasons is a good enough excuse to warrant it . Occasionally I just need a break, I did exactly the same when I was QOR CO, I would just disappear occasionally, sometimes for a few weeks, sometimes even for months. So you guys better get used to it . I have been a bit busier in my real life as well. I have not stopped working on the game though, although I probably put it in a slightly lower gear. Some stuff just isn’t as much fun making as other parts, I enjoyed making the lobby for example, while figuring out bugs and working on network routines is a pain in the ass . Anyway, I deeply apologize for my recent absence. Now lets get on with business.
Let me summarize what changes the next version will include (v0.8. Keep in mind that I might be forgetting a few things, I have…ehm…lost my notes . All this has already been implemented. All I have to do now is create a backup server running the current version of the game (v0.864c), in case the authentication server goes offline for example.
Give me 1 to 2 more weeks for that, then I’ll upload it and rejoin the community! I promise! Any way, the changes:
The game: • The game now supports different floor types • It will no longer be possible to multiply weapons • You can now use “/score” and “/time” in the chat box to get some info in case you are not playing yourself • Login has been implemented, everyone will have a unique ID • It is now possible to join a room while a game is in progress • Soldiers will now remain in the game as ‘ghosts’ (and can be killed) if someone leaves during a game. • It is now possible to rejoin a game if you have been disconnected from it. Say, you have a short power outage and get disconnected. You can then rejoin the room and continue playing! • Grass is now shown properly on Ati Radeon graphics systems • Several minor bug fixes have also been taken care of
The server: • A lot has happened to the server ‘under the hood’ to prepare it for authentication, stats and remote management.
Like I said, there are probably a few other changes I am forgetting right now. Most work actually went into stuff like the authentication system as well as the ability to rejoin a game. Especially the latter was quite tedious and frustrating and probably the main cause of my disappearance .
It is however also something I am most exited about, since it is useful in two ways:
First of all the system is now capable of letting newly connected people join in a game that is already running, which means it will now be easy to create truly open games, where people can join mid-game for quick fun. This isn’t in yet, but it will be soon.
Secondly, we all know that many people are still having stability problems with the game, in the sense that you might get booted, the graphics are screwed up or you are having connection problems. Now all these problems have many causes, and I am convinced these problems will diminish the further we get in development, keep in mind that this game is still very much beta!! Anyhow, if you get booted out of a game for whatever reason you can now at least rejoin. This means there won’t be many games anymore with uneven teams, which made them very unfair. This was a requirement for stats.
Speaking about stats....They are now my no.1 priority. If (and that is a BIG if ) this version is decently stable we could have stats on a short notice, within 3 weeks from now.
So my list is now as follows: 1. Set up preliminary stats 2. Include a truly open game made, where people can join mid-game 3. Further bug fixes 4. Good technical support so we can better fight the bugs
If we get that up and running, well, then we can get started on the fun parts, like actually adding new gameplay features to the game! I know this is all going very slowly, but I’d be willing to bet we achieved more in 7 months here then 2am did in a few years . And I’m not even getting paid!
Right. That’s about it. I once again apologize for my recent absence. I hope people are still playing the game . If not I’ll just keep working on it anyhow .
I also sincerely apologize to the staff, since I let them down. It’s just too damn easy to simply disappear on the internet, so we’ll be taking measures to stop me from doing that in the future .
Bandit, the experimental version of the game for map testing should be back online now! Give it a try, if it does not work post here!
Once again: I’m sorry!
KAding

Lobby Update - BSF2000 - May '03 | To all you people that haven't signed-up for the Chain of Command Newsletter, you missed the lobby update. So here it is:
I have a semi working version of the CoC lobby (i.e. gameclub). It currently is not tied into a backend database so players would be able to come in and see and chat with the other users but they would not be able to see stats, ranks, regs, and they will not be able to enter games from this lobby.
My question is- is there a benefit to the community to put the lobby up in this state or are we better off waiting until I am able to get it working with the missing features?
Your input is most welcome! - If someone wants to start a forum on this topic I will browse through it and see your thoughts.

Chain of Comm. News - BSF2000 - May '03 | I heard from the person hosting Chain of Command again. He notified me that he will try and start posting some FAQs about the game on Monday (5/5). Here is a segment of the e-mail:
"I do have the fixed weapons files which should give both US and Germans a fairer game in terms of the allocation of weapons files. As for the lobby and stats - I am making progress but it will likely be delayed a few weeks longer than I had anticipated." | | 0 - Add/View Comments |

Map Script Up - BSF2000 - Apr '03 | The first version of our map script is now up and ready to be used! It is a beta version, so don't expect it to be perfect. Some of the more advanced features are still being worked on, but the basics are working. All the credit goes to dreamnid for creating the wondering script. Remind him of how good of a job he did on it when you see him! Please report and bugs you find to BSF2000 or dreamnid.

Old CoC? - BSF2000 - Apr '03 | Surprisingly, old Chain of Command is up and running, and very much playable. Yes, you heard me, CHAIN OF COMMAND not CALL OF COMBAT. It is running on the newest version that was released before 2am went under. There is currently no stats nor regiments. There is also no lobby, but you can manually join games and play. I uploaded the client files and added a readme inside the zip.

Site Up - BSF2000 - Feb '03 | Our new site/design is finally up, along with the promised features:
Our new design is up. It was in the works for a couple of weeks, and I think it is a great improvement over the old brown.
The column section is back. If you remember old CoC Central, we had it, so I thought we could bring it back. There is a lot about Call of Combat to talk about, so be sure and send your opinions in!
Hosting of forums and websites is now avaliable. The applications are located near the bottom left menu.
Our map script is still being worked on. It may be up later tonight. I would like to thank dreamnid for making the wonderful script.
I still don't know what to put in that SOMETHING box next to HEADLINES. If you have an idea, post it in a comment on this topic.
